The Kingdom of Bhutan has been under the reign of the Bhutan monarchy for a hundred years. The fist king who ruled the kingdom was First King Gongsar Ugyen Wangchak and the Wangchuck family then has had governed the country. All the kings of the Kingdom of Bhutan are supposed to serve as the Trongsa Penlop to succeed to the throne. The Bhutan’s king is known as the Druk Gyalpo (The Dragon King).

This year (2008) marks one the most important occasion in the kingdom as it’s the 100th anniversary of Monarchy in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Big celebrations will be taken part all over the country as they highly respect the monarchy and feel grateful to all of the kings who have led the country to the glorious era.

The current Dragon King of the Kingdom of Bhutan is Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, who was born in February 21, 1980 and regarded the youngest head of state of the world. He has crowned the throne in December 2006 and represents the Fifth king of the Bhutan after his father his majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuk.

King Khesar is the oldest son of the former Bhutanese king and his father’s third wife. He has a younger full sister and brother while he has many half sisters and brothers. He finished his education in his home soil before continuing his study in Massachusetts, USA before graduating from Magdalen College, Oxford University in the UK.

He became more popular as Crown Prince Jigme Khesar when he attended the 60th Anniversary Celebration of Thai King Bhumibhol Adulyadej’s Accession to the Throne in June 2006 in Bangkok with other royals from 25 countries. King Khesar was the youngest guest at the age of 26 and he drew many attentions from female fans in Thailand. He was called ‘Prince Charming’ by the Thai press and his photos were widely sold in a number of shops in Thailand.
